The Department of Public Works and Marin County Fire Department are currently hiring one (1) full-time Fire Heavy Equipment Mechanic (FHEM) with the right qualifications and experience to provide safe quality repairs on a diverse Fire fleet. The FHEM performs major and minor mechanical repairs and maintenance of fire, rescue and emergency medical response equipment. The FHEM is responsible for overhauling and repairing gasoline and diesel powered fire engines, fire pumps, piping and foam systems, emergency medical and rescue equipment and automobiles and light trucks. As emergency repairs and maintenance may need to take place on the fire line at any time, the FHEM is subject to extended travel from the assigned Woodacre Fire station. 

Our Highly Qualified Candidate has experience working as a mechanic in the fire industry. The candidate has personal and professional integrity, is highly organized, possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills, approaches their work with enthusiasm, and demonstrates a strong commitment to customer service. The ideal candidate has vast experience maintaining (servicing and repairing) dump trucks, heavy construction equipment, tractors, trailers, electrical systems found on late model equipment, knowledge of HVAC systems, air brakes systems, basic hydraulic control systems and metal fabrication and various welding skills. In addition, the ideal candidate uses sound independent judgment and is capable of working independently for extended periods of time in remote locations, outdoors in any weather conditions and can work evenings, nights and weekends.

• Equipment, tools, methods and techniques of troubleshooting, overhauling, maintaining and repairing gasoline and diesel-powered firefighting, rescue and emergency medical equipment and components such as engines, fuel management systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems and air and hydraulic braking systems.
• Equipment, tools, methods and techniques of installing, maintaining and repairing pumps, piping systems, including valves and nozzles and foam systems.
• Methods of operating and maintaining testing machines.
• Mathematics includes computation of decimals and percentages.
• Standard sources of parts and supplies.
• Preventive maintenance techniques.
• Techniques and equipment of arc and oxy-acetylene welding.
• Basic inventory control methods.
• Safety standards established by CAL-OSHA and the Department of Transportation.
• Basic principles and techniques of supervision.

ABILITY TO

• Diagnose mechanical defects and determine appropriate maintenance and/or repair work.
• Effectively and efficiently repair or overhaul gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and related firefighting components with minimal direction.
• Install, maintain and repair a variety of valves, piping systems and pumps.
• Operate welding equipment such as oxy-acetylene and electric arc welders.
• Fabricate and repair metal components.
• Use and care for a variety of hand and power tools and testing equipment related to the trade.
• Prepare read, understand and follow written instructions, shop manuals and memos.
• Advise and check the work of fire department or mechanic staff that may be assisting with repairs.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
• Prepare and maintain inventory and vehicle maintenance and repair records.
• Work in a typical equipment shop environment.
• Lift heavy objects such as heavy equipment tires from a ground level position to the necessary equipment for installation or repair.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Three years of experience as a journey level mechanic which provides the following knowledge and ability requirements.

Certificates and Licenses: Possession of a valid class A California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving history as obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Compliance with federal DOT drug and alcohol policies is required.
