ABOUT THE POSITION

The Department of Public Works and Marin County Fire Department are currently hiring one (1) full-time Heavy Equipment Mechanic within the Fleet Division of the Department of Public Works. This position is responsible for major and minor repairs of diesel and gasoline powered heavy construction equipment such as backhoes, street sweepers, tractors, graders, large mowers, chippers, drag boxes, loaders, crawlers, large trucks and fire equipment and trucks used in a typical municipality fleet operation. Emergency repairs and maintenance may need to take place in the field at any time. There is one full-time (75 bi-weekly hours) position available.

ABOUT YOU

Our Highly Qualified Candidate has personal and professional integrity, is highly organized, possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills, approaches their work with enthusiasm, and demonstrates a strong commitment to customer service. The ideal candidate has vast experience maintaining and repairing dump trucks, heavy construction equipment, tractors, trailers, and generators. The ideal candidate is knowledgeable on computer diagnostic systems and electrical systems found on late model equipment, knowledge of HVAC systems, air brakes systems, basic hydraulic control systems and metal fabrication and various welding skills. In addition, the ideal candidate uses sound independent judgment and is capable of working independently for extended periods of time in remote locations, outdoors in any weather conditions and can work evenings, nights and weekends. The ideal candidate possesses one or more Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications and HVAC Certifications.

QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE OF

  • Equipment, tools, methods and techniques of troubleshooting, overhauling, maintaining and repairing a wide variety of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and components such as engines, fuel injection systems, hydraulic systems, electrical and electronic systems, climate control systems, safety devices and transmissions; electrical and electronic testing devices.
  • Methods of operating and maintaining testing machines.
  • Mathematics including computation of decimals and percentages.
  • Standard sources of parts and supplies.
  • Preventive maintenance techniques.
  • Basic inventory control methods.
  • Techniques and equipment used in arc and oxy-acetylene welding and safety precautions related to the work.
  • Safety standards established by CAL-OSHA and the Department of Transportation.
  • Principles and practices of commercial garage operations.
ABILITY TO
  • Diagnose mechanical defects and determine appropriate maintenance and/or repair work.
  • Effectively and efficiently repair and overhaul varied gasoline and diesel powered equipment and related components with minimal direction.
  • Operate welding tools such as oxy-acetylene and electric arc welders.
  • Use and care for a variety of hand and power tools and test equipment common to the trade.
  • Read, understand and follow written instructions, shop manuals and memos.
  • Prepare and maintain inventory and vehicle maintenance and repair records.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
  • Work in a standard equipment shop setting.
  • Lift heavy objects such as heavy equipment tires from a ground level position to the necessary equipment for installation or repairs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES

Any combination of education, training, and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to qualify is one (1) year as a journey level heavy equipment mechanic or three years as a journey level mechanic or an equipment mechanic assistant. 

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES 
Employees must obtain a California Class A driver's license within one year of the date of hire.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must provide a full set of mechanic's hand tools upon appointment.
