Job Description:

Reporting to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Student Life, the Interim Director of Community Standards and Conflict Resolution has responsibility for managing Berklee’s Student Conduct System, which adjudicates all non-academic student conduct. Berklee’s approach to student misconduct is supported by a philosophy of educating and supporting students in the Berklee community while simultaneously upholding the highest standards for ethical and responsible conduct. Equally important is the proactive design and delivery of educational programs that promote good citizenship, civic engagement, and community among the student body. The Interim Director will also provide supervision to the Assistant Director of Community Standards and Conflict Resolution, in addition to all Hearing Officers within the Division of Student Life as it directly relates to student conduct and community standards cases.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct leadership for, and management of, all undergraduate and graduate student conduct functions. Consult and advise on student conduct matters at all satellite locations, including the Valencia and New York City campuses.

  • Advise the Associate Vice President and Dean of Student Life on legal and policy developments and ensure that student conduct processes are in compliance with legislative, professional, and college regulations.

  • Act as a liaison to the College’s General Counsel on student conduct matters, as deemed appropriate.

  • Oversee the administration of effective and timely case management which includes pre-hearing meetings, the attendance of hearings, and all communication with complainants, respondents, and witnesses.

  • Serve as the Chair of the Community Standards Hearing Officer Meeting and ensure that all disciplinary referrals are addressed in a consistent and timely manner through appropriate student conduct processes and procedures.

  • Oversee the training of hearing officers on all aspects of student conduct processes and college policy.

  • Manage and coordinate investigative follow up on student conduct matters with all relevant offices, including Public Safety and Residential Life. Monitor and evaluate, in partnership with Public Safety and Residential Life, college policy enforcement processes and identify ongoing improvements.

  • Lead the effective evaluation and assessment of all student conduct processes, procedures, and programs.

  • Manage an annual policy review and revision process, including the yearly publication of the Code of Community Standards.

  • Oversee in-service training for student leaders, resident assistants, faculty, and staff on student conduct processes and college policy.

  • Oversee the implementation of departmental programming and resource materials on topics relevant to student conduct and conflict resolution.

  • Oversee the management of all undergraduate and graduate disciplinary records, and prepare regular reports of key statistics and identified trends.

  • Work collaboratively with members of the Health and Wellness team on sanctions associated with alcohol and drug violations.

  • Serve as a member of the CARES Team.

  • Assume additional responsibilities as required.


Supervises:

  • Assistant Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards.

  • Conduct Officers within the Division of Student Life for responsibilities directly related to student conduct and community standards cases.

Working Conditions:

  • Serve as a member of the on-call staff

  • Ability to travel on and off campus

  • Evening and weekend work expected

Required Skills:

  • Able to establish and maintain effective work relationships with faculty, administration, staff, parents, and alumni.

  • Strong analytical skills.

  • Able to work with a large and varied constituency.

  • Able to manage multiple projects and cases simultaneously.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to communicate effectively - orally, by phone, in person, and in writing.

  • Knowledge of college policies, disciplinary processes, and legal issues in higher education.

  • Able to provide administrative guidance within area of responsibility, providing direct training and supervision as needed.

  • Able to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives, and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.

  • Able to integrate resources, policies, and information for the determination of procedures, solutions, and other outcomes.

  • Able to respond to emergency situations in a timely manner.

Required Experience:

  • Master’s Degree required

  • A minimum of 10 years of increasingly responsible leadership roles within judicial affairs or student conduct
