Job Description:

The Boston Conservatory at Berklee (BCB) seeks a casual Projection Technician to support theatrical projections in a number of performances in the upcoming Spring 2025 semester. This position will primarily support productions taking place in the Mainstage Theater at 31 Hemenway, and may be assigned to support and advise on other BCB performances. The projections technician reports to the Technical Director, Mainstage, and works closely with the audio supervisor, lighting supervisor, outside designers, and the full Performance Services team.
The projection technician executes and maintains projection designs for the Boston Conservatory Theater at Berklee, including installing, maintaining, and programming the existing projector. Projection Technician will work closely will designers and production team during technical and dress rehearsals to operate and troubleshoot the projections as needed, including preparing and sharing any necessary paperwork. Projections may also include slide displays on separate TV displays for title cards and surtitles.
This is a casual position, with multiple positions available.A tentative schedule is provided below, please include your availability in your cover letter. Dates listed represent load-in through load-out, and do not include any additional pre- or post-production work. Partial availability will be considered. Dates subject to change.

● Dance: Dancing with the Berklee Stars - January 16 - 22, 2025
● Music: ContraBand ensemble - January 29 - 31, 2025
● Opera: Whaling Women/Riders of the Sea – February 3 - 26, 2025
● Theater: She Kills Monsters – February 18 - March 2, 2025 **significant projections work
● Dance: WinterWorks - March 3 - 16, 2025
● Opera: Cosi Fan Tutte - April 2 - 13, 2025
● Dance: Limitless - April 14 - 27, 2025
● Various end-of-year performances - April 28 - May 9, 2025

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Load in, strike, and maintain projection equipment during show runs
  • Program and operate projection software
  • Troubleshoot projection system issues as they may arise

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA in Theater or equivalent work experience
  • 2-4 years practical theatrical experience

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Expert knowledge of Qlab 5
  • Knowledge of projection equipment including projectors, lenses, and video signal distribution
  • Knowledge of standard and safe rigging practices and applications
  • Knowledge of QSC Q-SYS systems is helpful

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Troubleshooting and problem solving skills
  • Punctuality, dependability, and ability to work independently
  • Strong leadership and teamwork skills

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure a safe working environment in the venue for the students and crew regarding projection operation.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Indoor environments, some with low light: workshop, control booth, stages, backstage areas, office spaces
  • Seated and standing positions

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, ETC:

  • Nights and weekends required
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Must be comfortable with heights in excess of 24 feet
  • Must be able to work in tight, dark spaces
