ABOUT US

Marin County's Internship Program nurtures the power of individuals to make a difference, change lives, and improve the quality of life. Interns engage in real-world projects and collaborate with civic professionals, sharing a vision of the lasting legacy that is unique to public service.
 
The Marin County Sheriff's Office is divided into three major bureaus: Administrative and Support; Detention Services; and Field Services. Bureau responsibilities include maintaining the county jail, providing security to the Marin Superior Court, operating a communications division, operating the documentary services division, and operating the coroner's office. The Marin County's Sheriff's Office serves the county's unincorporated areas.  Providing patrol services from the shores of Tomales Bay to the hills of Novato, from Marin City to Point Reyes Station - protecting and serving all.

ABOUT THE POSITION

We are actively recruiting current college students to work as Sheriff's Cadets. During the school year you would intern approximately 16 to 25 hours a week depending on availability. The position(s) does not offer benefits.

Each cadet/intern will receive training in Sheriff's Office policies and procedures as well as specific job training from experienced cadet/interns and sworn and non-sworn personnel. Before participating in field related activities, cadet/interns must pass a formal training program.  Cadet/interns will learn report writing, traffic control and direction, basic evidence collection and community relations building.

The Cadet/interns perform duties that support Sheriff's Office activities such as:

  • Provide general information and assistance to the public in person or on the telephone.
  • Help maintain department vehicles.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Support the Patrol Division at large events.
  • Aid in marking and towing of abandoned vehicles.
  • Assist Investigations Division personnel with crime scenes.
  • Assisting the Coroner's Office.

ABOUT YOU

The successful candidate should be service-oriented, possess knowledge of basic office practices and business English, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation; have strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to read and understand laws, rules, and Sheriff's Office policies and procedures; and carry out instructions, analyze situations and determine appropriate responses.

We recognize your time is valuable, so please note that you must have at least the following required Minimum Qualifications in order to be considered for this position:  Applicants must be enrolled in an academic, vocational curriculum, or graduate level program at a college or university.

Additional minimum qualifications include: high school graduation or equivalent; be at least 18 years old; not have any felony criminal convictions; meet drug standards, able to work evenings and weekends; willing to wear a uniform; possess a valid California Class C driver's license; currently enrolled in college with at least 9 units per semester or 6 quarters (proof required); and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or better.
