Responsibilities*

Basic Function and Responsibility

  • Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, assist in the care of the childbearing mother and newborn.
  • Assist in the maintenance of a safe, supportive family-centered environment that supports patient needs.
  • Assist the obstetrical team during the delivery process and operative procedures.
  • Assist the RN in the care of the childbearing mother during all stages of labor to ensure a safe delivery for all labor patients (e.g. patient positioning, set up and tear down of instruments/sponges, obtaining QBL, etc.)
  • Ensure efficient and consistent management of surgical and procedural instruments and devices in VVWH. 
  • Must be able to perform a wide range of physical activities which include moving, standing for long periods of time, transporting and positioning patients and equipment as well as constantly positioning self to provide patient care and related duties.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team in addition to being able to take direction.
  • Communicate with patients, families and staff in a welcoming, caring and professional manner.
  • Understands and demonstrates the core concepts of Patient and Family Centered Care (PFCC), including: Respect and Dignity, Information Sharing, Participation and Collaboration.
  • Assist surgical team in operating rooms during operative and other obstetric procedures by preparing operative procedure room, sterile equipment for the operation, passing instruments, sponges, and sutures to the operating team, and ensuring disposition of all surgical specimens to lab processing.
  • Ensure instruments and equipment are inventoried, prepared for processing and transported to appropriate Departments for processing. 
  • Obtain processed equipment, instruments and supplies from other Departments and stocked in the OR/PACU area in a timely manner each shift.
  • Remove, clean, prepare, and transport instruments for processing and obtain processed instruments for stocking in any VVWH unit.
  • Prepare and select equipment and supplies for procedures
  • Assist with transfer of patients as needed
  • Follow cases offsite if VVWH patient
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduation from High School or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Completion of an accredited or military Surgical Technologist program is required.
  • This position requires moderate standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients.

    Desired Qualifications*

    • Some experience in the care of the inpatient perinatal mother and/or newborn.

    • Certification from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) is desired.

    • Experience as a Surgical Technologist is desired.

    • Experience with family centered care philosophy

    • Excellent interpersonal skills and customer relations.

    • Demonstrated ability to work as a part of a team in addition to being able to take direction.

    • Able to prioritize tasks quickly.

    • Completion of a Nurse Aide or Medical Assistant program with a minimum of 6 months of current experience in an unlicensed assistive role in an acute inpatient setting or 12 months current.

    • Basic computers skills

    • Demonstrated flexibility in an extremely fast-paced environment.
    • Demonstrated excellent communication skills.
    • Must have a commitment to contributing to a positive department culture.

    Modes of Work

    Work Schedule

    36 hrs week:  7:00pm-7:30am

    Union Affiliation

    This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

    Background Screening

    Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
