About the Role:
The Wastewater Process Engineer will be responsible for monitoring and optimizing one or more processes at the treatment plant.  Examples processes include liquids treatment, solids treatment, odor control, gas handling, reclaimed water, and industrial stormwater.  The Wastewater Process Engineer will also support capital project review/implementation, energy and chemical conservation initiatives, and the completion of regulatory tasks and reports. The Wastewater Process Engineer will become an expert on the plant's permits (including the NPDES, Puget Sound Nutrient, Industrial Stormwater, Reclaimed Water, and air permits) and help convey the requirements to plant leadership, operators, and maintenance workers.

This role performs all job duties onsite.

Job Duties

  • Monitor and optimize wastewater treatment unit processes (liquids, solids/biosolids, air emissions, energy recovery, reclaimed water, etc.) and overall plant operations to ensure regulatory compliance and to optimize final product quality (effluent, biosolids, air emissions).
  • Assist in troubleshooting unit processes and associated equipment operation, monitoring systems and controls. 
  • Conduct research and evaluation of special studies and projects to optimize plant processes to ensure maximum performance and cost-effective operation as determined by the supervisor or senior staff.
  • Make basic projections of chemical and energy use in plant processes and general plant operations for current and future conditions.
  • Prepare and/or review technical reports, project proposals and progress reports as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Qualifications You Bring:

  • Basic knowledge of engineering and/or scientific principles and techniques typically provided through four years of college-level training from an accredited institution OR any combination of education and work experience
  • Skill in oral and written communication techniques and principles and to apply this skill to read, write and follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Skill in working on multiple projects and assignments simultaneously and coordinating among diverse workgroups. 
  • Work experience in wastewater, including but not limited to coursework and laboratory assignments, internships at treatment plants or an industrial manufacturer, and professional working experience at a treatment plant or wastewater consulting firm.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with diverse individuals in varying occupations. 
  • Computer proficiency, as measured through familiarity with and use of general software (Microsoft suite applications such as Teams, Outlook, and Excel) and/or through familiarity with and use of industry specific software (e.g., Lab Information Management Systems, Distributed Control Systems, Water Information Systems, and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems). 
Required Licenses:
  • Washington State Driver's License
It Would Be Great if You Also Bring:
  • Possession of an Engineer-In-Training certificate (EIT) or combination of engineering work experience and/or education equivalent to a 4-year degree.

  • Work Location: Brightwater Treatment Plant 22505 WA-9, Woodinville, WA 98072, USA
  • Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week with flexible schedules. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible. 
  • Union Representation: This position is represented by S.E.I.U L925.
