Job Summary

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) conducts and supports a global program of research to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. The Clinical Trials Program (CTP) in the Vaccine Research Center within NIAID is soliciting applications for two staff clinicians (physicians) to serve as principal or associate investigators of Phase 1 trials evaluating vaccines or monoclonal antibodies against a variety of infectious diseases.

The Vaccine Research Center (VRC) conducts research that facilitates the development of effective vaccines and monoclonal antibodies for the prevention of infectious diseases, such as HIV, influenza, malaria, Zika, Ebola, and SARS-CoV-2.

CTP includes clinicians, protocol specialists, research nurses, study coordinators, data specialists, and other support staff. CTP conducts proof-of-concept, Phase 1 clinical research studies to assess the safety and immunogenicity of first-in-human vaccines and monoclonal antibodies. CTP is composed of approximately 50 people and initiates 3 to 5 clinical trials per year in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center. CTP also maintains and oversees collaborations and contracts with academic institutions, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, and nonprofit organizations that evaluate VRC products.

The staff clinician will work closely with the CTP chief and other VRC staff in clinical trial design, protocol development, clinical trial operations, and oversight.

Specific responsibilities include the following:

  • Design and implement innovative clinical research for the VRC
  • Serve as an associate or principal investigator for VRC clinical protocols and trials
  • Conduct and provide oversight for vaccine and monoclonal antibody clinical trials
  • Design, conduct, and analyze data from clinical and translational vaccine immunology research studies
  • Participate in a variety of meetings with the VRC's clinical development teams
  • Present VRC research findings publicly (domestically and internationally)
  • Develop and write manuscripts of VRC clinical research findings
  • Participate as a team member, co-chair, or chair of domestic and international protocol/clinical trial teams involving VRC study products
  • Serve as a member on NIH and external committees and boards as assigned by the VRC
  • Mentor junior scientists and clinicians, including clinical fellows
